Welcome to Voters Revolt

This website was born out of deep anger and frustration at a political establishment which over the decades has increasingly treated the British public with contempt.

It explains how our democracy is being eroded - and spells out how together we ordinary people can halt the slide into bureaucratic tyranny.

Brief Summary

Britain is embroiled in an almighty battle between "us" and "them" - the voters of Britain versus the new ruling class which ignores our views. Our elected representatives are under the thumb of the political establishment. The forces of bureaucracy and political correctness are throttling the rights and liberties of the people.

Slowly we are being herded into a police state from which it will be hard to break free. We must act now. We must force the parties to reform the system and give power back to us.

The British people will not tolerate this attack on their liberty. We must leave the political establishment in no doubt that at the next general election many will vote for the party which is most committed to giving power back to the people.

They won't want to listen. They will fight to keep the power they have taken from us. We must therefore stand firm and use the power that STRENGTH IN NUMBERS gives us. We must send the politicians a very clear message that their lives are about to change!

First ...

Voters Revolt is not an organisation or a party. It is simply a powerful idea.  It aims, through this website, to focus people’s growing feelings of frustration, hopelessness and resentment at the increasingly alarming powers of the State.

The origins of Voters Revolt

Voters Revolt was formed by ordinary people who saw the widening gulf between voters and politicians. They recognised that this is part of a deeper conflict between “us” and “them” - and that this is the key to bringing the arrogant political establishment back into line.

The country is ripe for a Voters Revolt.

Plan of Action

We are not powerless! We can use our Strength in Numbers to force the parties to act.

Voters Revolt demands that each party's manifesto must commit the party to restoring proper representative democracy. They must be left in no doubt that, if they don't, they will risk defeat at the ballot box.

We will give the incoming government one year to fulfil its manifesto promises.

The Threat

We will back this demand with a credible long-term threat if the parties ignore us.

More

The Mass Withholding of Council Tax

The mass withholding of Council Tax is one weapon at our disposal. It would be much more effective than isolated individual protests and far less risky. A mass withholding would demonstrate the number of votes at stake and the determined resolve of those taking part. The parties have to be convinced we can affect the result of the next election. This action will not be necessary if the parties accept that they must take steps to restore our democracy.

Credibility

If Voters Revolt is to work, it has to win the support of millions of voters.

More

How It Will Work

All it needs is for enough people to support the concept of Voters Revolt and resolve to take action if the need arises.

A resolute and united people has enormous power.

Campaigns

We British campaign for many noble causes. Too often, our deeply held views are ignored by the political establishment. We must stand together to defend our right to be heard. Voters Revolt and other campaigns can help each other with publicity. Campaigns which value democracy are listed with links to their websites. You can nominate a campaign to go on the list.

Who runs Voters Revolt?

No one! It has no leaders, no members. It is not a conventional campaign. It is an idea. This site sets out practical ways to implement that idea. Many others will campaign for democracy, each in their own way.

Democracy will only be saved if it is a deeply felt need in the hearts of millions of ordinary men and women.

You are the Voters Revolt. The fate of Democracy is in your hands.

Bureaucracy is growing

The shift of power and influence away from the people and into the hands of ministers and officials has continued under all governments. If bureaucracy becomes a tyranny it will require a revolution to reverse it. The next step after the Nanny State is the Police State.

The State Payroll

Nearly half the population depend on central or local government for their sustenance. Voters no longer control officialdom. Quangos are unaccountable and undemocratic.

More

The Straitjacket of Regulations

The EU is the source of many regulations.

English Regional Government has added more bureaucracy. Local government has been emasculated. Elected councillors are being gagged. The Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill would give most of the powers of Parliament to Ministers. “Modern” systems of government tend to concentrate and centralise power, widening the gap between “us” and “them”.

Democracy is in decline

Betty Boothroyd speaks about the public’s disillusionment with the political process. Tony Benn spells out the many changing conditions that have weakened representative democracy – the concentration of power in 10 Downing St, the EU and other international bodies.

A Conservative councillor writes about the stifling of local councils.

Alistair McConnachie explains Direct Democracy.

Lady Kennedy writes on the monopolistic power of the parties.

The Post-Democratic Society

Marc Glendening of the Democracy Movement analyses the move towards “post-modern authoritarianism”. The political class is bypassing local electorates.

More

Dangerous Bills

The Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill is “the most constitutionally significant Bill” for some years. It enables future Governments to bypass Parliament, as Hitler did in Germany.

Other Bills going through Parliament also threaten our democracy.

More

The Gagging of Councillors

An unbelievably draconian ruling under the Local Government Act 2000 is preventing councillors speaking on matters where they have expressed a previous opinion – undermining local government democracy.

More

Regionalisation

We should be wary of the regionalising of services and the plans for English regional government involving networks of quangos. Big may not be beautiful in local government.

More

Flaws in the System

Other parts of the system in need of reform are the BBC and MEP elections.

More

Political Correctness

Debate and decision are distorted by political correctness.

Making Democracy Work

We must restore trust in our constitution. The arrogance of the political ruling class has brought us to the brink of disaster. If we don’t act soon, we face bureaucratic tyranny, from which eventually the only escape will be by a revolution.

More

Electoral Reform

The traditional first-past-the-post system is failing us, contributing to political apathy and our distrust of politicians. Its uncorrected faults have weakened our faith in British democracy. It is clear what any reformed system ought to do. A good system was recommended by an independent Commission. MPs must feel they belong to their constituents more than to their party whips. Parliament has to reform itself and the electoral system. The parties have to be persuaded to put this in their manifestos.

The Stages of the Revolt

The Voters Revolt will evolve through many stages before it succeeds.

More

Neutrality

Voters Revolt takes no position on the aims of any other campaign or any party. It has to embrace adherents from every side of every issue. For example, it needs the support of europhiles and eurosceptics, of pro- and anti-hunting groups. Its only aim is to restore effective representative democracy.

More

The Last Word

Why is the restoration of democracy so important? Only we citizens can make our institutions honest, responsive and accountable. Our MPs and councillors are often unable to help us. We want to be listened to and our views to count again. We have to make sure our grandchildren can live in a free democracy.
