The Stages of Revolt

This page sketches out the stages through which Voters Revolt has passed and may have to pass in future before we can say UK democracy has been restored to good health.

The Original Campaign – for years we campaigned for freedom and democracy wherever we saw them under threat, here or in Europe.

The Common Thread – we realised all these threats arose from the clash of ‘we’ and ‘them’ in the new “post-democracy era” into which we are being dragged.

The Surge of Resentment – we saw and heard increasing popular resentment as people object to their views being treated with contempt and blame the growing dominance of party machines, quangos, cronyism and political correctness.

Are Ordinary People Powerless? – it is clear most of us think we are; hence the political apathy and distrust of the party system.

What Weapons Do We Have? – after considering all forms of civil disobedience, we identified mass withholding of Council Tax as the best way to demonstrate the strength of grass-roots feeling about the decay of democracy.

The World of Campaigns – we saw that restoration of democracy is the one issue no one will disagree with and that the millions of people involved in hundreds of campaigns would see the advantages of supporting a Voters Revolt.

How Can Democracy Be Restored? – many steps will have to be taken, but we decided to suggest electoral reform as one big step forward to start the journey.

The Plan – we put together a plan of action to give a focus for the tide of popular feeling already flowing.

The Website – we scraped together enough money to set up this site.

Publicity – we are working at the publicity needed to gather the numbers and credibility we need for the Revolt to work.

The Launch – Voters Revolt and this website were launched in April 2006, ready in case an early general election is called.

Gathering Strength – media interest is growing and the website counter is clicking away.

Party Manifestos – we will be writing to all mainstream party leaders and MPs asking for their support and demanding that they include specific proposals in their manifestos committing them to restoring democracy.

Possible Pre-Election Action – if both Labour and the Conservatives refuse to support the aims of Voters Revolt, we might have to consider an early call to withhold Council Tax as a show of strength before the election.

General Election – we hope the parties will be competing to show their commitment to restoring democracy. We will work to highlight the issue and influence support towards whichever party is most committed to democracy.

Twelve Months To Act – if the next government has not taken convincing action on democracy within twelve months, we will consider calling for a mass withholding of Council Tax, probably timed before the next council elections.

The Long March – we are determined to continue Voters Revolt for many years, if necessary, until democracy is saved. The movement will no doubt evolve as the political climate changes. We will never give up until we know our grandchildren will be free to live in the best democracy in the world. How long it takes is up to you.
